Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University freshman midfielder Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) only saw 85 seconds of action against Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon.

But boy did he make those seconds count.

McGowan collected a rebound off of a Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) shot and pounded the ball past Indianapolis goalkeeper Hunter Extine to lift the host Flyers to the 1-0 overtime victory over Indianapolis at the Lewis Soccer Field.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 7-3-1 overall and 6-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Greyhounds drop to 4-5-2 on the campaign and 2-6-1 in conference play.

McGowan did not see any action during regulation and was inserted into the lineup, along with teammate Eduardo Axcer Way (Chicago, Ill./Schurz/Wartburg College) in the overtime session to give the Flyers some fresh legs, according to Fiffles. Way set up Cartwright for the game-winner with a nice cross pass, and McGowan was there to clean up the rebound.

"I've got confidence in Robbie because he started every game for us until Friday (against Northern Kentucky)," Fiffles said. "I put Robbie and Axcer in the game because we needed fresh legs. They did what they were supposed to do and Kipp put it on frame. We had to put shots on (Indy's keeper) and force him to make saves in the mud. We put it on him and their keeper couldn't hang on to it."

Fiffles admitted his squad wouldn't score any style points for the win, but he'll gladly accept the results.

"I'd rather win ugly than lose playing great," Fiffles said. "Any coach would take it, but you have to give Indianapolis credit. Usually when you're playing ugly, the other team does it to you."

Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made two saves in goal for his sixth shutout of the season.

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 9), as they travel to Indiana to square off with Saint Joseph's for a 5 p.m. start.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
