Men's Soccer: Lewis 2, Saint Joseph's 1 in PDF Format
Rensselaer, Ind. - Lewis University senior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) broke a 1-all tie, with his team-leading eighth goal of the season, in the 68th minute, as the visiting Flyers won their fourth-straight game with the 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Saint Joseph's on Friday night.
Hernandez broke away from the pack, thanks to a long pass from senior defender Justin Vander Heyden (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and beat Puma goaltender Alex Makin for the game-winner. The Berwyn, Illinois native has now scored in five of the Flyers' last six games.
"I was really pleased with the way we played today," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "This was one of our better offensive games that we've played this season. I really thought we dominated the flow in the second half."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 8-3-1 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while the Pumas drop to 6-5-2 on the season and 3-4-2 in GLVC action.
The Flyers opened the scoring in the first half, as junior midfielder Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) collected his first goal of the season, blasting a Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez) rebound past Makin for the tally.
The Pumas scored with one minute remaining in the first half, as Saint Joseph's Greg Gehrig as he knocked in a cross pass from Bojan Adler less than 70 seconds left in the period.
Lewis freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made seven saves in between the pipes for his eighth win of the season.
The Flyers return home on Sunday to square off with UW-Parkside for a 2:30 first kick at Lewis Soccer Field.
