ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A fourth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship was not to be for the No. 11 Lewis University women's volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. No. 9 Indianapolis avenged their only defeat of the season by defeating Lewis 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16) in the GLVC Championship.
The Flyers led the opening set 22-20. Senior Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) delivered a kill and then teamed for a block with junior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) for point 24. Lewis took the set on an attack error by Indianapolis.
Little did the Flyers realize, it would be the last lead they would hold in the match. Indianapolis dominated the second set and took the momentum into the third by scoring the first four points. The fourth set was tied at five when Indianapolis pulled away with six-point stretch. Courtney Anglemyer had the kill for Indianapolis on championship point.
The Greyhounds out-hit (.273 to .120) and out-blocked (13.0 to 9.0) Lewis.
Senior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) led Lewis 14 kills and 11 digs. Seliga had 16 digs and eight kills.
"All the credit goes to Indianapolis they played very well," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "We need to regroup and focus on regionals."
The loss snaps the Flyers' 41 home match win streak, which dated back to 2007. The streak ranks eleventh all-time in NCAA Division II women's volleyball history. The loss also halts Lewis' school record 27-match win streak.
The win improves Indianapolis to 35-1. The Flyers fall to 30-4. Lewis earned the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Regional and will play No. 7 seeded Ferris State.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
