ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) started the 2009-10 season by scoring a career-high 36 points, however Florida Southern defeated Lewis 81-77 in the season opener for the Flyers.
Turpel totaled the 36 points on 14-of-24 shooting, and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Her only miss was on purpose in the final seconds. She also added eight boards, three blocks and two steals. She did it all with no turnovers.
The difference in the game came from the arc. Florida Southern connected on 8-of-17 while Lewis made just nine of 31 attempts from 3-point range. Seven different players made Lewis' nine 3-pointers.
Turpel's 19 points at half helped Lewis to a 40-37 lead at the break. In the second, the Moccasins focused on Turpel causing the Lewis offense to move outside.
"They packed it on JT in the second half and limited her opportunities," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Without connecting on a few of the outside shots they could get away with that."
In a back-and-forth game, it looked like the Moccasins were pulling away when they scored nine points in a minute and a half to take a 62-53 lead with 12:02 remaining. Following a Lewis timeout, the Flyers went on a 10-0 run to take back the lead. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) had seven of her 11 points during the stretch.
A trey by sophomore Sierra West (Hartford, Wis./Slinger) gave Lewis their final lead of the game at 3:28. The Moccasins built an eight point lead with 24 second remaining, only to see the Flyers cut it to three on a basket by Turpel, a five second call on Florida Southern and a 3-point play by Turpel. The Moccasins' missed the front end of a one-and-one with six seconds left, however Florida Southern immediately fouled Turpel before the Flyers could advance the ball up the court and attempt a game winning 3-pointer. Turpel made the first, however Lewis couldn't corral her intentional miss on the second.
Megan Dzikas led Florida Southern with 24 points.
