CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) scored 11 points with the help of three 3-pointers, however Illinois defeated Lewis 75-40 in an exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon at Assembly Hall.
The Flyers led 17-15 at the 12 minute mark of the first half on a 3-pointer by sophomore Sierra West (Hartford, Wis./Slinger). The trey was one of five the Flyers made in the first. However the Fighting Illini finished the half on an 18-6 run to take a 10-point lead into the break.
A 3-pointer and a layup by junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) cut Illinois' lead to 41-33 five minutes into the second half, however it was as close as Lewis would get.
"We talked about getting the ball inside and we had some trouble doing that today," head coach Lisa Carlsen. "However this is about getting better and I saw some things we improved today. We're better than we were a week ago."
Senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) totaled 10 points. Turpel finished with seven points, seven rebounds and a block in 23 minutes.
Jenna Smith led Illinois with 13 points.
Lewis plays their third and final exhibition contest on Tuesday evening at Northern Illinois.
