ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Four Flyers finished with double-digit points in Lewis' 84-59 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference newcomer Maryville on Saturday afternoon.
Maryville's only lead came on the opening basket of the game. Strong Lewis defense along with early success from beyond the arc helped Lewis open a 25-11 lead through the initial ten minutes of the game. A layup by junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) at the first half buzzer gave Lewis a 44-33 lead at the break.
A pair of Turpel baskets and a layup by senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) gave Lewis a 50-33 advantage after halftime. The Flyers never looked back from there.
Turpel finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) totaled 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Dianis totaled 15 points. Sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) had 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) finished with 11 rebounds and seven points.
Lewis held edges in rebounds (56-40), assists (17-8) and blocks (8-0).
"We did a good job on the boards and most importantly turned them to points," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We had some reserves come in and make a difference today."
Mikal Bencomo led Maryville with 14 points. The loss drops the Saints to 2-4 (0-2 GLVC).
Lewis improves to 3-3 (2-0 GLVC). The Flyers hit the road on Tuesday for a non-conference contest at Grand Valley State tip-off is 6 p.m. CT
