Feb. 13, 2009

Houghton, Mich. - The 2009 campaign got off to a rough start for the Lewis University men's tennis team as the Flyers dropped a pair of decisions to both Lake Superior State (6-3) and Michigan Tech (5-4) at Michigan Tech's Gates Tennis Center on Friday.

The bright spot for Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel was the performances of freshman Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallina Audentese Erakooli) and sophomore Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare).

At No. 1 singles, Lapimaa upended Lake Superior State's Pawel Wegryzn, 6-0, 6-0 and followed with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Michigan Tech's Brett Girard.

Irdoja was equally as dominant at No. 2 singles with wins over Lake Superior State's Brandon Clayton (6-1, 6-4) and Michigan Tech's Anders Sandholm (6-5, 3-6, 6-3).

Lapimaa and Irdoja paired up at No. 1 doubles and picked up victories over Lake Superior State's Clayton and Robert Nelson (8-5) and Michigan Tech's Girard and Douglas Yossida (8-4).

The Flyers return to action on Sunday, as they travel to Evanston to square off with Division I Northwestern. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
