St. Cloud, Minn. - An early morning 2-1 loss to Concordia-St. Paul served as a wake-up call for the #13 Lewis softball team, as the Flyers bounced back and swept both games against host St. Cloud State, 12-2 and 8-3 at the 2009 Husky Dome Classic on Saturday.
"I think 2-1 is a great start," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We could have been 3-0, but I'm not going to grouse about it, because we had some bad luck.
Sophomore Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glendale North) provided the only offensive highlight for the Flyers in the opening game against Concordia-St. Paul, as she launched a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Golden Bears' lead in half. The Flyers, however, could not come any closer, as Concordia-St. Paul held on for the 2-1 victory.
Lewis senior pitcher Courtney Lyons (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro) took the complete-game loss for the Flyers, striking out eight batters, while walking five.
"We didn't hit in the first game," DiMatteo said. "We didn't deserve to win."
The Flyers responded in fine fashion against the host Huskies, collecting 13 hits on their way to the 12-2 five-inning victory. Senior first baseman Carissa Castonzo (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs scored, including a three-run homer to pace the Lewis offensive attack.
Lewis sophomore hurler Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) earned the complete-game win for the Flyers, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs while striking out two batters.
Lewis sophomore designated hitter Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) provided the offensive fireworks for the Flyers in the third game, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, including a two-run homer, leading the way to the 8-3 victory over St. Cloud State.
Senior pitcher Julie Wingerter (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) claimed the victory for the Flyers, allowing one hit and striking out four Husky batters in three innings of work.
