Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) made a career-high five 3-pointers, all in the first half, to help the Lewis women's basketball team defeat Kentucky Wesleyan 68-57 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

The Flyers jumped out to a 22-4 advantage thanks to three quick treys by Monaco. The Panthers rallied to cut it to 28-19 with 5:03 remaining in the first, but two treys by Monaco helped push the Flyers' lead to 13 at half. Monaco finished 5-of-9 from long range for 15 points.

"We started the contest really getting after it on the defensive end," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We got in passing lanes, took away dribble presentation and made it difficult for them."

The numbers show Carlsen was right, as the Flyers finished with a 21-9 turnover edge.

Kentucky Wesleyan cut the Lewis lead to seven points in the second, but the Flyers made 15-of-16 free throws during the game's final 3:31 to put it away.

Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had a game-high 19 points, adding five boards, two steals, an assist and recording only one turnover. Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added 13 points and six boards. Senior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron) finished with nine rebounds, six points and two steals. Sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) had a career-high eight assists. She also added five points, five boards and four steals.

"Kady was responsible many times for getting the ball inside and letting Jenny and Devon go to work," Carlsen said. "She did a great job of getting the ball to people and letting them be successful."

Lewis shot 41 percent from the floor. Kentucky Wesleyan shot 44 percent. Amanda Harnist had 10 points and 15 boards for the Panthers. Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 9-12 (4-8 GLVC). Lewis improves to 11-10 (7-5 GLVC).

The Flyers have the weekend off and host Indianapolis next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Greyhounds are a game in front of the Flyers in the GLVC East.
