ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Freshman Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) fanned eight in 6.2 innings of work, but was the tough luck loser in the Flyers' 4-0 loss to non-conference Winona State on Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field.
Lahey allowed three runs, two earned, and seven hits in his first home start as a Flyer. Lahey's record falls to 1-1.
"Pat threw well," head coach Tim McDonough said. "He wasn't the reason we lost today."
Winona State scored the first run of the game in the third with a home run by Mike Brabender. The Warriors added another in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Kes. Jared Anderson had a two-out single to score Ronnie Olson in the fourth to make it 3-0 in favor of the Warriors.
Winona State threatened in the sixth but Lahey induced a double play to get out of the inning without a run crossing the plate.
The Warriors added one in the ninth to make the final 4-0.
Lewis' best opportunity came in the third. Freshman Ryan Wischhover (Palos Heights, Ill./Brother Rice) recorded his first career hit to lead off the inning. After two Lewis strike outs, freshman Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) singled to right field but Wischhover was thrown out at third base.
Winona State's Tony Mueller (1-1) stymied the Flyers, allowing no runs on three hits in eight innings.
Winona State improves to 6-7, the Flyers fall to 7-6. Lewis opens conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Bellarmine at noon.
