Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's tennis team got off on the right foot on Friday afternoon, as the host Flyers earned the 6-3 victory over Indianapolis in both teams' Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at the Lewis Tennis Courts.
Freshman Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) proved to be the catalyst for the Flyers, as the O'Fallon, Illinois native was the lone Lewis player to win both of her matches on Friday. In doubles' action, she teamed up with Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) for the 9-7 win over Indy's Aly Neidlinger and Lee Matthews at No. 2. Hargrove would later pick up the 6-1, 6-2 win over Alena Perez-Majul at No. 3 singles.
With the victory, Lewis improves to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in GLVC action, while the Greyhounds drop to 5-6 on the campaign and 0-1 in conference play.
"Our ladies played a little better in the doubles, but we still need to play the way we practice and we're not doing that yet," Lewis University head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "Our top three ladies played very well in singles. It was a good start to conference play, but we need to work on our mental toughness and play like we practice."
SeniorsAgata Wojciechowska (Des Plaines, Ill./Oakton CC) (Des Plaines, Ill./Oakton C.C.), Jordan Lynde (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) and Melanie Sandberg (Motala, Sweden/Platenskolan/Truman College) earned the other victories in singles action for the Flyers. Wojciechowska picked up the 6-0, 6-4 win over Matthews at No. 1 singles, while Sandberg took home the 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 come-from-behind win over Maggie Ashby at No. 2 singles. Lynde claimed victory at No. 6 singles with the 9-8 win over UIndy's Kelsey Hartman.
In No. 3 doubles' action, Lewis sophomore Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) teamed up with freshman Maggie Novack (Fort Wayne, Ind.) for the 8-5 win over Hartman and Ceciley Starkey
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 21) morning, as the Flyers welcome Northern Kentucky for a 10 a.m. first serve at the Lewis University Tennis Courts.
