ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) had four hits and three RBI on the day including a two-run home run in game two to help Lewis to a 7-1 victory over Bellarmine in the nightcap of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers dropped the opener 15-3.
Householder returned to the lineup after suffering an injury early in the year.
"Scott provided a much needed boost in the lineup," head coach Tim McDonough said. "It's good to see him back in there and I think the guys fed off his energy."
In game two, Lewis got on the board first with five runs in the second. Junior Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) hit a high fly ball that Bellarmine's right fielder muffed. McManaman hustled into third base on the error. Junior Joe Carbone (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Florida Gulf Coast University) made the Knights pay for the error by grounding out to score McManaman. Freshman Ryan Wischhover (Palos Heights, Ill./Brother Rice) followed with a double and then sophomore Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) singled to push Wischhover to third. Sophomore Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) grounded out to score Wischhover. Then the Flyers turned on the two-out hitting. Freshman Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) singled home Koerner to make it 3-0. Householder stepped to the plate and made it 5-0 with a home run to right field.
Lewis made it 7-0 in the fourth on Anello's first collegiate home run. His blast scored Vucsko who kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single.
Bellarmine pushed their only run of the game across in the fourth. Otherwise, Lewis starter junior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) was sensational. He allowed one run on five hits and two walks in a complete game performance. Scumaci fanned six and improves his mark to 2-0.
"Joe is starting to establish himself as a guy who can be a top arm in this league," McDonough said. "We're going to continue to need that from him."
Anello finished the game with three RBI. Householder had a home run, single, walk and a stolen base.
In game one, the Knights got on the board in the first when Todd Duckworth hit a two-run home run over the first field fence with two outs.
Bellarmine threatened in the top of the fourth but starting pitcher senior Chris Brigham (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville) earned a double play to get out of the inning.
Householder started the bottom of the fourth with a double off the left center field wall. A ground out by senior Ryan Reynolds (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) moved Householder to third. However back-to-back strikeouts left Householder on third.
The Knights added a run in the fifth to make it 3-0.
Lewis loaded the bases with no outs during their turn in the fifth but scratched across just one run on an RBI single by sophomore Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport).
Bellarmine extended their lead thanks to eight runs in the ninth inning.
Brigham falls to 2-2, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 5.1 innings of work.
Wischhover finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Householder had two doubles and an RBI.
The Knights are now 14-9 (3-3 GLVC). Lewis is 8-7 (1-1 GLVC). The Flyers host Bellarmine on Sunday in a doubleheader at noon.
