Somers, Wis. - Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo saw two different versions of his squad on Wednesday afternoon, as his Flyers and UW-Parkside battled to a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader split.
The Flyers won the first game 8-2 with timely hitting and solid defense, while the Rangers took advantage of three Lewis errors and bounced back for the 7-0 whitewash in the nightcap.
"It was night and day out there," DiMatteo said of the difference in his team's performance in both games. "We beat their ace in the first game and we were thinking sweep. In game two, we just did not execute the way that we are capable of. We hit the ball very hard in game two, but they were either right at UW-Parkside or they just made a great play. UW-Parkside's defense was spectacular."
With the split, Lewis moves to 28-13 on the season and 10-6 in GLVC action, while the Rangers are 15-15 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
In the opener, senior Courtney Lyons (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro), junior Kara Harmatys (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) combined for seven of Lewis' eight RBI. Harmon also connected for her team-best eighth homer of the season.
Lyons improved to 8-7 in the circle, as she tossed a complete-game, eight-hitter, while fanning 13 batters. UW-Parkside hurler Kallie Walczak took the loss for the Rangers, allowing eight runs on five hits.
In the nightcap, the Rangers tagged Lewis sophomore pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) with her first loss of the season, as she allowed six runs, four earned, and four hits in 2.1 innings of work. With the loss, Pickrum drops to 9-1 on the season. Of the seven runs scored, only four were earned, as the Flyers committed three errors on the evening.
UW-Parkside pitcher Jessica Bryant (5-3) tossed the complete-game shutout for the Rangers and fanned three batters.
Lewis returns to action on Friday afternoon, as they head to Louisville to square off with Bellarmine for a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
