Owensboro, Ky. - Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo had been searching for a way to get his offense rolling and dropped sophomore third baseman Stephanie Trapp (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) down to the clean-up spot in the Flyers line-up.

Trapp responded by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI to help push the visiting Flyers to the 10-0 (5 inn.), 2-0 (8 inn.) Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan at Foster Field on Wednesday afternoon.

"What a great way to start the trip," DiMatteo said. "We had been struggling with our offense recently, so I made a little change in the line-up, and we exploded right off the bat."

The Flyers also received dominant pitching performances from both sophomore Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and senior Courtney Lyons (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro) as they limited Kentucky Wesleyan to just six hits on the afternoon, while fanning five batters.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 25-12 and 7-5 in GLVC play, while the host Panthers drop to 16-18 overall and 4-8 in conference action.

In the opener, Trapp went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while senior left fielder Jessica Beck (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) went 2-for-3 with a team-best three RBI. Flyer first baseman Carissa Castonzo (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored in the win.

Pickrum kept her record flawless at 8-0, tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout. Olivia Randolph took the loss for the Panthers, allowing 10 runs and 11 hits in five innings of work.

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel as both Lyons and Haleigh Ashworth each threw seven shutout innings.

Senior right fielder Lisa Gartland (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) opened the eighth inning with a leadoff single off of Ashworth and stole second. Lyons moved Gartland over to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore designated player Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) plated Gartland with a RBI single.

One out later, Trapp and senior shortstop Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) roped back-to-back singles. Castonzo added an insurance run for the Flyers with a RBI single.

Lyons improved to 6-7 on the campaign, as she held the Panthers to four hits on the evening, while fanning five batters. Ashworth (11-6) took the complete-game loss for Kentucky Wesleyan, scattering nine hits and striking out four batters.

The Flyers return to action on Thursday (April 9), as they head to Evansville, Ind., for a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Southern Indiana.
