Men's Soccer: Lewis 2, Northwood 0
Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University senior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) scored two goals to help the #12 Flyers to the 2-0 non-conference victory over Northwood in the season opener at the Lewis Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.
"Nestor came through," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "He had two big goals for us and to get the (shutout) was nice for our freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates). I thought he and our back four played well to get the `clean sheet' today."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-0, while the Timberwolves drop to 0-1 on the campaign.
Hernandez posted his first tally of the game in the first half, as he pounded home a rebound off of an Art Rodriguez (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) shot on goal at the 20:12 mark. The Berywn, Illinois native added an insurance goal for the Flyers with 22:35 left in the contest, as he took a feed from senior Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic).
Hernandez posted up his defender, turned and launched a rocket past Timberwolves' goalkeeper Matt Renouf for the final goal of the game.
Renouf finished with eight saves on the afternoon, while Kieruzal picked up his first collegiate shutout, stopping four Northwood shots.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Aug. 30), as they welcome Saginaw Valley State for a 2:30 p.m. showdown at Lewis Soccer Field.
