PENSACOLA, Fla. - Senior Sara deBuhr (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) had nine kills and four blocks however No. 15 West Florida swept No. 21 Lewis (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) in the season opener for both schools on Thursday evening.
The Argonauts started sets one and two with leads of 7-0 and 5-0, respectively. The Flyers rallied within two at 18-16 in game two; however three straight West Florida points put a stop to Lewis' rally.
A 5-1 run in the third set allowed West Florida to take a 10-6 lead and never look back.
West Florida's Chelsea Wilhoite had match-highs with 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior
Junior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) added 11 digs and four kills.
Senor Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) added six kills and five blocks.
"Our two middles (Richards and deBuhr) worked really hard tonight," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "The offense I had them running had them moving a lot. Plus they worked hard to close the block."
West Florida out-hit Lewis .217 to .088.
"They were much cleaner in transition than we were," Smith said. "In long rallies they controlled the ball better and that allowed them to set up their offense. They played like a 15th ranked team."
Lewis is 0-1 while West Florida is 1-0. The Flyers play Henderson State and Lynn on Friday during the second day of the West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational.
