ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Allison Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) celebrated her birthday with a gift to her teammates, a game winning goal with minutes remaining to lift Lewis to a 3-2 victory over Northwood on Thursday afternoon.
Schieffer found space in a crowded box to deliver the game winning goal with exactly 7:33 remaining. Schieffer was subbed in less than ten minute before she scored. It was the first goal of her career.
Northwood got on the board in the first five minutes of the game thanks to a long strike from Mallory McCarthy. Five minutes later the Flyers responded when junior Jessica Summers-Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) followed a shot by sophomore Jordyn McMahon (Rockford, Ill./Boylan). Summers-Hernandez pounded the deflection home to knot it at one.
The tie was broken just 17 seconds into the second half on a goal from the deep left side by senior Jessica McNamara (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Several diving saves by Lewis goaltender junior Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and one Northwood shot that hit the crossbar kept the game at 2-1. However at the 64:52 mark Northwood's Shelby Dunwyn headed in a corner kick from Marie Zaccagni to tie it at two.
George made three more saves the rest of the way, six total in the game, to give Schieffer the chance to be the hero.
"Megan came up huge with several big stops," head coach Chris Koenig said. "She played very well in the air."
Northwood held a 15-12 edge in shots.
"I'm happy we fought and clawed for the victory, but we have things we need to work on," Koenig said. "We'll have to play crisper and faster next time out. I know it and the team knows it also."
Lewis is 1-0, Northwood falls to 0-1. The Flyers host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday at noon at the Lewis Soccer Field.
