ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 20 Lewis women's volleyball capped the 2009 Flyer Festival with a pair of non-conference victories at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday. Lewis defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 25-27, 25-20) in the opener and capped the day with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 sweep of Winona State.

The Flyers easily won the first two sets but the third was closer. Lewis trailed 20-16 but rallied back to take a 24-23 lead. IIT turned away two match points to rally for the win. The fourth set was tied at 19 when Lewis closed out the match on a 6-1 stretch.

Sophomore Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) set a career high with seven kills.

The Flyers were in control of the entire match. Lewis had a 13-2 run in the second set and a 7-2 stretch in the third to remove all doubt regarding the outcome.

"We handled the ball really well," head coach Lorelee Smith said of the Winona State match. "They came up with some big digs and we didn't let that frustrate us. I think we ended up winning most of the longer rallies."

The Flyers improve to 9-3. Lewis has won 31 straight home matches, a streak tied for the 15th longest in Division II women's volleyball history.

The Flyers travel to Indianapolis to open conference play against the No. 13 Greyhounds on Friday. Indianapolis has a perfect 14-0 record, however Lewis has won eight of the last nine meetings against the Greyhounds.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
