St. Louis, Mo. - After being held scoreless over their last three contests, the Lewis University men's soccer team exploded for five second-half goals, led by two tallies from sophomore Cristian Chavez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), on their way to the 6-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road triumph over Maryville on Sunday afternoon.

"It's nice to get that conference win, because we needed to get that conference win," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Some of our guys came off the bench and did some nice things for us today."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 2-2-1 and 1-2 in GLVC play, while the Saints remain winless at 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

Flyer senior Tim Vance (Highland, Ill./Mater Dei) provided the only score of the first half, as he scored at the 5:48 mark.

The Flyers tacked on a quick score at the outset of the second half, as freshman midfielder Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored his first career goal at the 47:16 mark.

Lewis senior forwards Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez) and Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) each posted second half scores for the Flyers, while Chavez found the back of the net twice in the final 1:11 of the game.

Lewis freshmen goalkeepers Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) and Matt Mikesell (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine) combined for the shutout with four saves. Maryville keeper Conrad Buechter made eight saves on the afternoon.

The Flyers return to action on Friday (Sept. 18), as they welcome Missouri-St. Louis to the Lewis Soccer Field for a 2:30 p.m. first kick.
