ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis women's soccer team surrendered an early goal to Southern Indiana on Sunday but from there on the Flyers possessed the ball for most of the contest. However Southern Indiana was able to make the lone goal stand the rest of the way and top the Flyers 1-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Sunday afternoon at the Lewis Soccer Field.
At 3:47 Jessica Gates delivered a cross just in front of the left post. Katie Teagarden took the pass and put it in the back of the net for the only goal of the game.
Lewis had their chances, holding second half advantages in shots (10-7) and corner kicks (6-3). The Flyers' attack was aided by a red card delivered to Southern Indiana's Nancy Newcomer at 68:04.
Junior Jessica Summers-Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) and sophomore Allison Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) each had three shots and one on goal. Schieffer raced in from the left side and almost knotted it up at 76:05 however her attempt was stuffed by the Southern Indiana keeper.
Lewis goalkeeper Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) made four saves.
"It was a physical match like we expected," head coach Chris Koenig said. "We had opportunities but you can't win games until you take advantage of those chances."
Southern Indiana improves to 4-3-2 (3-1-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 2-4-2 (1-3-1 GLVC). The Flyers hit the road on Friday for a road conference match at Kentucky Wesleyan.
