ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Three Flyers recorded double-digit kills in No. 13 Lewis' 3-1 (23-25, 32-30, 25-9, 25-22) non-conference victory over UW-Parkside on Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis dropped the first set after leading 20-15.
The second set featured as frantic back and forth volleyball as Lewis has seen this year. The frame featured 18 ties and the lead changed hands on six occasions. Lewis fended off two Rangers set points and were pushed to a sixth set point of their own before getting the win. On the 32nd tally it was former outside hitter turned defensive specialist redshirt sophomore Kelly McConkey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) surprising the Rangers' defense by sending the ball over instead of setting it for a teammate. The ball found the court and Lewis had the set.
Lewis used a 9-0 run in the third set to fuel a dominating 16-point win and take a 2-1 advantage.
Lewis led 19-16 in the fourth set only to see the Rangers rattle off three straight. Down the stretch however the Flyers stayed strong, earning all final six points by way of a kill.
Senior Sara deBuhr (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) delivered her match-high 17th kill on match point to end the contest. deBuhr hit .314 and had three digs and three block assists. Fellow middle hitter senior Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) also had a strong night. She hit .382 with 15 kills and three blocks (one solo).
"Kim had a good night," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "She played hard with lots of energy and never quit. I think she was a spark plug to get us going on a Tuesday night when we needed a jolt."
Reigning conference player of the week, senior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), had 15 kills and seven digs.
Redshirt senior Ashlee Lindish (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) recorded 16 digs. Junior setter Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) finished with 53 assists, eight digs and seven kills.
UW-Parkside falls to 12-5. The Flyers improve to 12-3. Lewis returns to conference play on Friday with their first ever visit to Illinois-Springfield.
