Elmhurst, Ill. - Lewis University junior Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi) came out the chutes blazing on Friday evening, as the Chicago, Illinois native won the 4K Elmhurst Earlybird Cross Country Invitational with a winning time of 14:50, edging teammate Amanda Porter (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley/Shawnee State) by nine seconds.
Despite the 1-2 finish, the Flyers placed second overall behind Division III power Wheaton. Wheaton had 56 points, followed by Lewis (66), Elmhurst (81), Illinois Tech (93), Judson (111), Trinity Christian (178), St. Francis (183), Dominican (251), Concordia (261), Aurora (265), Benedictine (288), North Park (340) and College of DuPage (356).
Lewis freshman Amy Clawson (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) impressed in her debut, as she finished 11th overall with a mark of 16:00.
"I'm real happy with the way the girls performed, especially going 1-2 in the race," Lewis head women's cross country coach Dana Schwarting said. "To have three girls finish in the top 15 is a very good day."
Junior Kellsi Howell (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) was the fourth Flyer to cross the finish line with a mark of 16:34, while teammate Ashley Lucas (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) followed right behind her with a time of 16:35.
The Flyers are back in action next Friday, as they travel to Peoria, Ill., to participate in the Bradley Open at 5:30 p.m.
