ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 15 Lewis began the 2010 season with a convincing 3-0 (30-19, 30-17, 30-19) victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday night at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers out-hit the Raiders .408 to .072 and held a dominating 13.5 to four edge in blocks. Freshman Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) led Lewis with seven kills and no errors.

"Offensively Ian was pretty good for us tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "Especially for a collegiate debut."

Sophomore middle hitter Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) totaled five kills on no errors. Flick also added three blocks (one solo).

"As a group our middles hit .500," Friend said. "You can't expect much more than that."

Junior outside hitter Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) added six kills and an ace.

The opening set was tied at 13 until a 6-2 run gave the Flyers breathing room. A 7-1 stretch in the second frame turned a one-point game into an 18-11 Lewis advantage. The Flyers took control of the final set with a quick 10-4 lead in the third. MSOE twice advanced within two points but both times a Raider service error ended their rally.

13 Flyers had a hand in a block and 12 totaled kills.

MSOE falls to 0-1. Lewis improves to 1-0. The Flyers are next in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Rutgers-Newark for a non-conference match.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
