ROLLA, Mo. - Three Flyers finished in double-digits in Lewis' 69-59 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory at Missouri S&T on Thursday evening.
Aside from a 2-0 Missouri S&T lead to the start the game, the Flyers led the entire way, holding their largest lead of 17 with 3:49 remaining in the first half thanks to three consecutive treys.
The Lady Miners were able to cut the Flyers' lead to two at 55-53 with less than five minutes remaining. On the ensuing possession sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) grabbed a key offensive board to keep the ball in the hands of the Flyers. Seconds later freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) scored three of her 11 points with a clutch trey. Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) grabbed a missed 3-pointer on the other end and then knocked down a jumper to end the Lady Miners' hopes.
Lewis shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) while limiting Missouri S&T to 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field.
"We had good balance, especially in the second half," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Our defense kept us in it if we had a turnover or a bad offensive possession on the other end."
Turpel led Lewis with 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored 14 thanks to going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Murdock totaled 11 points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and four steals.
"Labrenthia filled up the stat sheet," Carlsen said. "She was solid on the offensive glass and took good shots."
Shaw finished with six rebounds and five points in just 15 minutes off the bench.
Lewis held a 39-33 edge in rebounds.
"This was a good win," Carlsen said. "It's hard to beat a good team like S&T on the road."
The Flyers improve to 10-8 (6-3 GLVC) while Missouri S&T falls to 10-8 (5-5 GLVC). Lewis travels to Drury on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
