ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis women's basketball team won their seventh Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup Thursday evening defeating Kentucky Wesleyan 68-55 at Neil Carey Arena. Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored a game-high 21 points while adding 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.
The Flyers extended their 31-25 halftime to 11 points in the second half but the visiting Panthers were able to chip away the lead to two points with just under 13 minutes to play. Lewis quickly responded as they did for much of the game thanks to a basket by sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay). The Flyers were able to bury free-throws late in the game to seal the deal for the win.
Lewis controlled much of the first half extending the lead to nine with 8:05 left in the half. The Panthers were then able to cut the deficit to one point with 1:43 remaining in the frame, but after a baseline jumper by Shaw and a bucket from freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake Ill./Round Lake), the Flyers extended their lead going into the half to six points.
Murdock finished with 13 points, six steals and three blocks in 37 minutes of action.
"Labrenthia is still learning but she's a great player who is learning," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "As she continues to progress she will give us things not a lot of other players on the team can give us."
In addition to her 15 points, Shaw added nine rebounds nearly missing a double-double.
"Tonight was probably the best game Lory's had since she's been here," Carlsen said.
The Flyers won the rebound battle 47-29, including a 20-5 advantage on offensive rebounds leading to 22 second chance points for Lewis.
Kristen Rowe led Kentucky Wesleyan with 10 points while Jennifer Coronelli added eight. The Panthers had 10 players score at least two points.
Lewis improves their record to 11-9 (7-4 GLVC) while Kentucky Wesleyan drops to 10-10 (3-8 GLVC).
The Flyers return to action on Saturday as they welcome Southern Indiana to Neil Carey Arena for a 1 p.m. tip-off. It will be the second game on the current four-game home stand. Lakeshore Public Television will broadcast the game live, which can be viewed over the air and on satellite through DirecTV and Dish Network on Channel 56, on cable channel 17 in most Northwest Indiana communities, and on 18 and 21 in Chicago and its suburbs.
