ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) scored a season-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting with a career-best 11 rebounds for her first career double-double in Lewis' 60-51 victory over Southern Indiana at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Dianis knocked down a season-best five 3-pointers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference victory. Her performance comes a game after scoring her 1,000th career point against Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday.
For the sixth consecutive game, the Flyers took control of the offensive boards with a 20-16 advantage over the Screaming Eagles. The Flyers turned their advantage into 22 second chance points compared to USI's 12.
"It's a great number to see," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "The kids really have some confidence on the glass right now."
The Lewis defense was able to contain the USI offensive attack, holding the Screaming Eagles to just 51 points for the game on 19-of-57 shooting. Lewis held the Screaming Eagles to just six bench points, 23 below their season average of 29.4 points per game.
"We played well on the defensive end, if we play like that every game we can beat anyone on any given night," Carlsen said.
Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) also had a double-double for Lewis with 11 points and 10 boards for her first double-double of the season.
"Today Devon played the way she knows how and I'm excited to see her have a game like that," Carlsen added.
The first half was highlighted by an 11-0 run with 9:14 left in the frame with five different Flyers scoring. The 30-20 halftime lead was cut down to two points with 10:11 remaining in the game thanks to a 7-0 run by USI while also holding Lewis scoreless for 7:24 before the Flyers countered the attack with a 10-0 run of their own to put the game out of reach for the Screaming Eagles.
Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) chipped in eight points in just 26 minutes of action due to foul trouble while junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) added seven. Freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) and sophomore Lory Shaw each had six points.
Anaris Sickles had a game and season-high 22 points for the Screaming Eagles. The Flyers were able to contain the GLVC's eighth leading scorer Ellen Young to just six points on 2-of-12 shooting.
Lewis improves to 12-9 (8-4 GLVC) while Southern Indiana falls to 15-6 (6-4 GLVC).
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 4) when they welcome St. Joseph's to Neil Carey Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
