LOUISVILLE - Bellarmine's Destiny Mattingly made a free throw with two seconds remaining to lift the Knights to a 63-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Lewis on Monday evening.
Bellarmine led by three points with under five minutes to play when sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) tied the game with a 3-pointer. Senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) gave Lewis a three-point advantage with 1:28 remaining on a jump shot. The Flyers led by two when the Knights' Allison Osen stole the ball. Mattingly converted on the other end to tie it with 34 seconds remaining.
Lewis' Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) missed a runner with 12 seconds left. The Knights corralled the rebound and called for time. Currin fouled Mattingly with two seconds left on the other end to put Mattingly on the line. She made the second of two free throws to clinch the win for Bellarmine.
Four Flyers finished in double-figures. Carbaugh added 17 points off the bench thanks to shooting 7-of-7 from the line. Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) totaled her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Currin totaled 12 points while Dianis added 10.
The first half was all Lewis with the Flyers holding a lead as large as eight points. Bellarmine outscored Lewis 33-28 in the second half to counter the Flyers' 34-30 lead at the break.
"We were in control the whole game but we had a few possessions especially late in game where we kept the door open and Bellarmine took advantage," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "I thought for the most part our defense was solid, it was the turnovers that did us in."
Lewis committed 13 of their 18 turnovers in the second half.
Melissa Fritz led Bellarmine with 16 points. Bellarmine shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) while Lewis finished 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor.
Bellarmine improves to 10-3 (3-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 6-7 (2-2 GLVC). The Flyers continue conference play on Thursday with a road contest at Quincy. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard on the WJOL 1340 AM or LewisFlyers.com
