Quincy, Ill. - For the third-straight game, the Lewis University men's basketball team gave all they could on the road against a very tough opponent, but fell just short, as the No. 16 Quincy Hawks stayed undefeated with the 83-78 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Flyers at the Pepsi Center on Thursday (Jan. 7) night.
Quincy entered Thursday's contest shooting 52.6% as a team, which currently puts them fifth overall in the nation. The Hawks did not disappoint against Lewis, as Quincy shot 56.6% (30-for-53) from the field and 47.8% (11-for-23) from three-point range.
With the victory, Quincy remains undefeated at 14-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while the Flyers drop to 9-5 on the campaign and 1-4 in GLVC action.
Quincy forward Justin Brock garnered a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead five Hawks players in double-figures. Quincy senior guard Mookie Pierre added 17 points, while junior guard Tyler Burke came off the bench and knocked down five three-pointers to finish with 15 points.
Hawks forward Billy Baptist chipped in a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Courtney Belger had 11 points in the win.
The Flyers shot a scorching 73.3% (11-for-15) from three-point range, led by four three-pointers from sophomore forward Justin Jarosz (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport). Jarosz finished with 18 points, while sophomore guard Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) knocked down all three of his three-point attempts and finished with 15 points. As a team, Lewis shot 50.0% (29-for-58) from the field.
Lewis junior guard Dennis Thomas Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) posted a game-high 21 points, including three trifectas, while junior Donald Rowe (Kansas City, Kan./Wyandotte/Independence C.C.) added 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
It was a back and forth affair that featured eight ties and 17 lead changes over 40 minutes. The final tie of the ballgame came with 8:26 left in the contest, following a pair of free throws from Thomas Jr, as the score was knotted up at 63-apiece.
The Hawks then wrested control of the game for good, as they went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes, led by four points from Belger, to give the Hawks a 70-63 advantage with 6:28 left in the contest.
Lewis would creep as close as 81-78 with 18 seconds left in the contest following a Thomas three-pointer. The Flyers were forced to foul, and Pierre knocked down both of his free throws to secure the victory for the Hawks.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon, as they travel to the capital of Illinois, as the Flyers square off with Illinois-Springfield for a 3:15 PM tip-off.
