SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) delivered a game-high 16 points to help Lewis cruise to a 76-45 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) opened the game with three layups. The Flyers then followed with three consecutive 3-pointers to grab a quick 15-10 lead. Lewis took their first double-digit lead of the game with 5:53 remaining in the first at 27-16 on a Monaco trey.
"We talked before the game about establishing ourselves in the paint and making them take that away before we establish ourselves on the perimeter," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
The Prairie Stars cut the Lewis lead to seven with two minutes remaining in the half only to see a Monaco trey and a pair of Turpel baskets give Lewis a 39-24 lead at the break. The Flyers quickly pulled away in the second half.
Monaco scored her 16 points off 4-of-6 shooting from long range. She also had three steals. Turpel's streak of four consecutive double-doubles was snapped, however she played just 17 minutes scoring 12 points, grabbing five boards and tallying four steals.
Freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) hit double-digits for the second consecutive game with 12 points and three blocks. Senior Amy Smith (Southgate, Mich./Anderson) had five rebounds, two points and two assists in 11 minutes off the bench.
Lewis limited UIS to 30.5 percent shooting (18-of-59) and forced 28 Prairie Stars turnovers. Kelly Thompson led UIS with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Prairie Stars fall to 2-11 (0-6 GLVC).
Lewis improves to 8-7 (4-2 GLVC). The Flyers host Rockhurst on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. start.
