ST. LOUIS - For the first time since 2008, the Lewis women's volleyball team dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference match, falling to Missouri-St. Louis on Friday evening. The No. 8 Flyers were swept by No. 22 UMSL 25-17, 25-22, 25-19.
Both teams hit sub .000 in the opening set. However UMSL took the frame thanks to their serving. The Tritons had two aces and no errors while Lewis committed three service errors and had zero aces.
Lewis took their first lead of the match in the second set at 2-1, however they wouldn't hold a lead in the set again after UMSL scored four straight points.
The third set was tighter. The squads were tied at 19 when UMSL finished on a 6-0 run to take the match.
UMSL out-hit Lewis .134 to .054.
"We couldn't get anything going tonight," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "We didn't serve tough enough and we didn't pass well enough."
The streak ends Lewis' conference winning streak at 18. The sweep also marks the first time the Flyers have been swept in a conference match under Lorelee Smith.
Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) had 16 digs and seven kills for Lewis. Shelby Crawford led UMSL with 10 kills.
UMSL improves to 11-3 (4-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 12-2 (4-1 GLVC).
