Oct. 15, 2010

Box Score

AURORA, Ill. - Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) had a career-best seven aces, but No. 11 Lewis fell to No. 12 Hillsdale 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11) at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover on Friday evening.

Lewis easily won the first and third sets and had late leads in the second and fourth sets until Hillsdale rallied for the victories in each.

The Flyers held a 19-4 lead in the second set, but five straight Hillsdale points knotted it up. Lewis held another lead at 23-22 but three consecutive kills by Hillsdale gave the Chargers the set.

The Flyers led the fourth set 22-18 when four consecutive Hillsdale points knotted it up. Senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) had a kill for point 24 to give Lewis match point. However it would be the last point Lewis scored in the set as three consecutive Hillsdale kills pushed the match to a fifth set.

Lewis' only lead in the fifth set was due an ace by senior Kelly McConkey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) to start the set. Hillsdale scored the next three points and the Flyers could never catch up.

"We had an opportunity to get a big win tonight," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "But even when you get up you can't lose focus against a good team like Hillsdale."

Seliga had seven of Lewis' 10 aces. The Flyers didn't allow a single Hillsdale ace.

The difference in the match came down to digs. Hillsdale recorded 87 digs to Lewis' 67.

Sophomore Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township/Nova Southeastern) hit .382 with 16 kills for Lewis. Seliga and junior Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) each had 11 kills. Seliga added 14 digs.

Clara Leutheuser had 20 kills for Hillsdale. Each team had 11 blocks.

Lewis falls to 16-3 while Hillsdale is 16-2.

The Flyers play No. 25 Grand Valley State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
