AURORA, Ill. - No. 11 women's volleyball dropped a 3-2 decision (20-25, 30-28, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13) to No. 25 Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover.

The match featured 38 ties and 18 lead changes, including eight ties and five lead changes in the fifth set alone.

Lewis led the fifth set 13-11 after three consecutive points. However the Lakers finished the match on a 4-0 run. The Lakers' Rebeccah Rapin had three kills in the run.

"I was disappointed in some of our key players," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "I feel like they didn't elevate their game when we were in a position to win."

The Flyers trailed the match 2-1 and it looked like Lewis wouldn't see a fifth set when they were trailing 17-13 in the fourth set. However Lewis rolled off four consecutive points to knot it at 17. Freshman Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) was serving during the stretch. Lewis finished the set on a 12-3 run.

"In game four, in addition to her serving Amy had some key coverage plays and some huge digs to give us some momentum," Smith said.

Grand Valley easily won the third set after rallying from deficits of 13-5 and 20-17 to win the second.

Lewis earned a victory in the opening set thanks to an 8-0 run spurred by the serving of graduate student Adria Phillips (South Bend, Ind./Riley/Indiana).

Sophomore Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) hit .385 with 12 kills and 16 digs for Lewis. Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) led the team in kills (15) and digs (23). Senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) recorded nine kills and seven block assists.

Rapin totaled a match-high 25 kills for the Lakers. Defense was the name of the game as Lewis recorded 99 digs while Grand Valley had 97.

The match marked the third consecutive match between the Lakers and Flyers to go five sets. Last year at the Crossover Lewis rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five.

Grand Valley State improves to 14-5. Lewis falls to 16-4.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference won the Crossover over the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time in the three year history of the event. The final tally was 23-22 in favor of the GLVC.

Lewis hosts Saint Xavier on Thursday in a non-conference match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
