ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Four Flyers recorded double-digit digs to help No. 14 Lewis women's volleyball defeat UW-Parkside 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-18) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) had 16 digs and 13 kills. Graduate student Adria Phillips (South Bend, Ind./Riley/Indiana) and freshman Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) each totaled 15 digs.
"Amy is not playing like a freshman libero," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "She is digging balls and keeping us alive on important points."
"Adria ran balls down and dug balls from all three defensive positions tonight," Smith said.
Sophomore Mary Carroll (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) came off the bench in the second set to provide nine digs and seven kills.
"Mary came in and had energy and was aggressive," Smith said. "It really sparked the team."
Sophomore Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township/Nova Southeastern) recorded 16 kills with three blocks (one solo).
Lewis fell behind 7-3 in the opening frame, but finished the frame out-scoring the Rangers 22-8.
Lewis found themselves in a huge hole in the third set, trailing 15-7, however the Flyers stormed back to tie it at 22. It was tied at 23 when the Rangers scored the final two points of the set to escape with the win.
The third set was the closest, at least for half of it. It was back and forth all the way until 15-15 when Lewis scored the final 10 points of the frame. Five of the points came off Lewis kills and five came off attack errors by UW-Parkside.
Lewis never trailed in the fourth set.
Lewis improves to 20-4 (10-1 GLVC). The Rangers fall to 17-9 (6-5 GLVC). Lewis hosts Maryville on Friday at 7 p.m. The match will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television.
Should the Flyers win on Friday, it would be their third consecutive undefeated regular season at Neil Carey Arena.
