Kenosha, Wis. - Lewis University senior forward Armin Vrebac (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem), the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, continued his torrid play on Friday (Oct. 8) afternoon, as the Loves Park, Ill., native turned a hat-trick to lead the visiting Flyers to the 3-2 come-from-behind GLVC win over UW-Parkside at Wood Road Field. The win marked Lewis' seventh-straight victory.
Vrebac has collected six goals in his last four games, and his hat trick is the Flyers' first since three-time All-American Nestor Hernandez posted three tallies against Saint Joseph's on September 21, 2008.
"Armin did a good job out there today," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "He had some opportunities out there and he finished those chances when he needed to."
With the win, Lewis improves to 8-3 overall and 8-2 in GLVC action, while the host Rangers fall to 5-5-2 on the campaign and 3-5-2 in conference play.
Vrebac had a worthy adversary in UW-Parkside's Collin Monahan, who accounted for both of the Rangers' scores.
UW-Parkside was on the board first, as Monahan snuck one past Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) at the 38:13 mark to push the Rangers ahead, 1-0. Lucas Klees and Austin Robb assisted on the play for the Rangers.
Not even two minutes later, Vrebac found the back of the net to even up the score at 1-apiece at the 40:01 mark.
Monahan saw Vrebac's score and raised the Flyers another, as he posted his second goal of the half with 1:45 remaining in the first period to give UW-Parkside the 2-1 advantage heading into halftime. Ben Kreple and Jason Moxely assisted on the score for the Rangers.
Vrebac, however, would not let Monahan get the upper hand, as he scored the unassisted equalizer in the 54th minute to square the game up at 2-apiece. Senior midfielder Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) assisted on the play.
He would later add the finishing touch at the 79:59 mark, as he pounded in his third unassisted score of the day off a feed from freshman Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) to secure the Flyers' seventh-straight win.
Kieruzal made seven saves in goal for the Flyers to earn the win, while his counterpart Palani Apuakehau made five saves for UW-Parkside.
Lewis returns home on Sunday (Oct. 10) afternoon, as the Flyers welcome Saint Joseph's for a 12 p.m. first kick at the Lewis Soccer Field.
