UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) each recorded double-doubles for Lewis women's basketball on Friday evening at Saginaw Valley State. However the Flyers lost the season opener 75-70.
Saginaw Valley led 26-15 with nine minutes left in the opening half when Lewis went on a 20-1 run to take a 35-27 lead with 5:22 remaining in the half. Junior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) had a 3-pointer to cap the rally.
Lewis led by five at the half and led for the majority of the second half until Saginaw Valley took their first lead of the second half with 3:29 remaining on a Marah Kyle layup. The Flyers never led again.
Turpel finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Shaw totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds. She connected on 8-of-10 free throws. Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) added 13 points, seven boards and four assists.
Brittany Burkhardt led Saginaw Valley with 17 points.
The Flyers are 0-1. Saginaw Valley is 1-0. Lewis plays Upper Iowa on Monday at 7 p.m. in the home opener for the Flyers.
