Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener 70-58 Over Upper Iowa

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Three Flyers finished in double-figures as Lewis women's basketball defeated non-conference foe Upper Iowa 70-58 on Monday evening in the Flyers' home opener.

Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) drained four 3-pointers, all in the first half, and finished with a team-best 16 points. She had back-to-back steals in the first half which set up four points in the middle of a 17-2 Lewis run which helped Lewis take a lead as large as 15 in the opening half.

"Kelly has always been able to shoot it but she's playing with more confidence defensively now," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Her positioning has really improved and she showed it with some steals tonight."

Lewis led by as many as 21 in the second half before cruising to the 12-point victory.

Sophomore Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) finished with 14 points, making all seven free throws she attempted. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 12 points and three steals. Junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) totaled 10 rebounds and eight points. Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) had eight assists and four points.

Lewis made 11-of-11 free throws in the opening half before finishing 22-of-25 for the game. The Flyers shot 44.7 percent from the field while limiting Upper Iowa to 38.2 percent shooting.

Upper Iowa falls to 0-1. Lewis is 1-1. The Flyers host Wayne State on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
