ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton)'s (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) last second 3-pointer failed to find the bottom of the net as the Lewis women's basketball team dropped a 55-52 non-conference decision to Ferris State on Tuesday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
3-pointers by senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) gave Lewis a 50-49 advantage with 2:02 remaining. The teams traded the lead until a layup by Ferris State's Katy Fox gave the Bulldogs a 53-52 lead with 37 seconds remaining. On the other end, jumpers by senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and sophomore Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) missed the mark. Two Ferris State free throws gave Lewis the ball back with under 15 seconds and a 3-point deficit. Currin took the final shot to tie the game but it wouldn't fall.
The contest featured 16 lead changes and 13 ties. Ferris State shot 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the floor while limiting Lewis to 31.1 percent shooting (19-of-61). Lewis forced 26 Ferris State turnovers but committed 20 of their own.
"The 26 is great, but we can't turn it over 20 times, not with this experienced group," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Give Ferris credit, they were aggressive and a step quicker than us tonight."
Junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) led Lewis with 12 points while grabbing seven boards. Monaco and senior Carol Kruckman (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) each added 11 points for Lewis.
The contest is Kruckman's second consecutive double-digit point performance.
"Carol was strong to the basket and took what the defense gave her," Carlsen said. "She kept things simple."
Rinehart grabbed six offensive boards.
Ferris State improves to 2-1 while Lewis falls to 2-2.
Lewis will play No. 23 Tusculum on Friday and Marygrove on Saturday in the UIndy Classic on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
