Women's Hoops Upset Bid Of No. 9 Grand Valley Falls Short 77-62

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis women's basketball gave No. 9 Grand Valley State all they could handle, leading at halftime and late in the second, but in the end the Lakers left Romeoville with a 77-62 victory.

Lewis forced the Lakers to take a timeout just seconds before the first media timeout of the game after senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) drained a jumper to give the Flyers a quick 13-8 advantage.

Grand Valley tied it at 25 with 6:37 remaining in the first half but a transition 3-pointer by senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) gave the lead back to Lewis. Monaco had three treys in the opening half. The basket helped Lewis hold a 36-33 lead at the break.

Grand Valley started the second half strong, taking a three-point lead five minutes in. Lakers led by five when seven straight points by senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) gave Lewis a 49-47 lead with 12 minutes to play. The score was tied at 57 with under six minutes to play when Grand Valley finished the game on a 20-5 run.

"We really fought hard for about 35 minutes, and whether it be fatigue or a few shots not falling, we didn't play as well over the final five minutes," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.

Monaco's five 3-pointers moved her into fourth all-time at Lewis with 164, passing current assistant coach Tracy Summers.

Turpel finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Turpel's two blocks moved her into fourth all-time at Lewis with 95.

Lewis finished 38.6 percent from the floor (22-of-57). Grand Valley totaled a 46.1 percentage (35-of-76). Grand Valley earned 21 more shot attempts than Lewis thanks to holding a 20-9 edge in offensive rebounds.

"When you look at the stats those 20 offensive rebounds really stand out," Carlsen said. "We weren't able to come up with key rebounds at key points."

The game featured 11 ties and 14 lead changes.

Lewis falls to 5-4 while Grand Valley improves to 8-0. The Flyers are off until next Sunday, Dec. 19, when Lewis plays at St. Francis. Start time is 2 p.m.
