ST. LOUIS - Lewis women's basketball took a 30-point halftime lead and cruised to a 92-45 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
Lewis scored the first six points of the game and took it from there. The Flyers led by as many as 32 points in the first half until a pair of UMSL free throws made the halftime score 45-15 in favor of the Lewis.
UMSL's 15 points marked the best first half defensive performance for a Lewis team since March 4, 2005 when the Flyers limited Southern Indiana to 14 points in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
"We did a good job of running the floor early and getting some easy transition baskets," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "I think that helped our confidence on both ends."
Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored the first four points of the game and the second half. She finished with a game-high 14 points. Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) and junior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) each had 13 points. All 12 Flyers scored for Lewis.
Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), the GLVC leader in assists, had seven assists.
The Flyers shot 50.0 percent (28-of-56) from the floor. UMSL made just 2-of-21 3-point attempts and finished 23.1 percent overall from the floor
"We forced them to take some tough shots," Carlsen said.
The Flyers have scored 90 plus points in three of their last four games. In those four games the Flyers are averaging 88.5 points.
UMSL falls to 3-4 (0-2 GLVC). Lewis improves to 5-3 (2-0 GLVC). Lewis returns to non-conference play on Saturday, Dec. 11 with a home contest against No. 14 Grand Valley State. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
