RENSSELAER, Ind. - The Flyers dropped a 70-66 road Great Lakes Valley Conference contest to St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers rallied to take a two-point lead in the second half after tailing 30-22 at halftime but couldn't hold the lead.
Lewis made a season-low 3-of-19 3-point attempts while St. Joseph's connected on 9-of-21.
"We've been shooting the ball better on the perimeter but that didn't happen today," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Give credit to St. Joseph's, they did a nice job of hitting their outside shots today."
The Flyers scored the first seven points of the game. It was a 15-11 Lewis lead when the Pumas made four consecutive 3-pointers. The Pumas led the rest of the half.
The Flyers scored the first four points out of locker rooms to cut the St. Joseph's lead to 30-26. Despite the scoring spurt, Saint Joseph's built their lead to as many as 11 in the second half. The Flyers took their first lead of the second half with 7:39 remaining at 50-49 thanks to an 8-0 run in which sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) scored five points. Lewis led 54-52 a minute later when senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) completed a four-point play.
It would be the last lead Lewis would hold. Saint Joseph's held on the rest of the way despite the Flyers cutting the Pumas' advantage to one with 52 seconds remaining on a layup by junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg). Following two free throws by St. Joseph's the Flyers looked to cut the lead back to one with 30 seconds remaining, but a lob pass to Turpel under the basket hit the bottom of the rim and caromed to St. Joseph's Jen Szala to seal the game.
Turpel finished with 26 points, 20 in the second half, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
"I like Jenny's aggressiveness, but we need to make it easier for her," Carlsen said. "We're relying on her too much and watching her work. We can't do that."
Dianis added 16 points and five rebounds. Shaw added seven points and seven rebounds.
Lewis held a 37-23 edge in rebounds, including a 17-3 advantage on the offensive end. However the Flyers committed 19 turnovers to St. Joseph's 15.
"We had situational things like silly fouls, reaching instead of taking a charge and lapses in transition defense," Carlsen said. "We had enough of those possessions to put us in a hole."
St. Joseph's improves to 7-18 (5-11 GLVC) while Lewis falls to 14-11 (10-6 GLVC). The Flyers host Illinois-Springfield on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
