Grandville, Mich. - The Lewis University women's tennis team was not intimidated in their match-up on Sunday (Feb. 21) against regionally-ranked Grand Valley State, but the host Lakers proved to be too much for the visiting Flyers, earning the 7-2 non-conference victory at the Ramblewood Tennis and Health Club.
"We came out really well in doubles, but we still need to be willing to stay in the points longer in our singles game," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said.
With the victory, Grand Valley State improves to 12-4 on the season, while the Flyers drop to 2-3 on the campaign.
Junior Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and sophomore Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) put the Flyers on the board first with an 8-4 triumph over GVSU's Jackie Shipman and Rachel Rendina at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Jana Schulz (Recklinghausen, Germany/Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium) was the lone singles winner for the Flyers, as she emerged victorious with the 7-6, 6-2 decision over Tara Hayes at No. 1.
Lewis returns to action on Monday, March 1st, as the Flyers travel to DeLand, Fla., to square off with Puerto Rico for a 10 AM (EST) first serve.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
