Kissimmee, Fla. - Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo saw some good things on Saturday (Feb. 27) afternoon, as his Flyers split a pair of contests in the Rebel Spring Games with a 4-2 come-from-behind regional win over Northwood and a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Georgian Court at Osceola Field.

"I thought we pitched well today," DiMatteo said. "We held a tough Georgian Court team to two runs and we beat a very good Northwood team. Overall, I see some promise and the make-ups of some special players.

With the split, Lewis moves to 1-3 on the season, while Northwood falls to 1-1 on the season and Georgian Court improves to 2-0.

Clutch hitting proved to be the difference for the Flyers against Northwood, as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit against the Timberwolves with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshmen Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) accounted for all three Lewis hits against Northwood.

Vucsko went 2-for-3 with a RBI double in the second inning, while Hanford roped the game-winning, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win for the Flyers.

Walks were the downfall for Northwood, as the Timberwolves pitching staff surrendered five bases on balls to Lewis, three of which would come around to score.

Junior pitcher Diana Pickrum (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) earned the complete-game victory for the Flyers, scattering eight hits and striking out four batters. With the win, Pickrum improves to 1-1 on the season.

Vucsko accounted for two of the Flyers' three hits in the nightcap against Georgian Court with a pair of doubles, including a RBI two-bagger in the bottom of the sixth inning. That RBI would cut Georgian Court's lead to 2-1.

The Flyers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) led off the frame with a double off the left field wall. Junior outfielder Sarah Hurley (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield Central) sacrificed her over to third base.

The Georgian Court pitching staff was up to the task, however, as Lewis' Kayla Smith (Glendale, Ill./Glenbard North) and Alicia McKendry (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) both struck out to end the game.

Lewis freshman pitcher Amy Christopher (Lafayette, Colo./Holy Family) was tagged with the loss in her collegiate debut, allowing five hits and striking out two batters in four innings of work.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 28), as the Flyers square off with Gannon (9 AM) and St. Rose (11 AM) in second day action of the Rebel Spring Games.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
