EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Flyers scored 13 straight points early in the second half to pull away from Missouri S&T 69-62 Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament First Round contest. Back-to-back 3-pointers by junior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) highlighted the run.

Lewis led by as many as 10 points in the opening half only to see the Lady Miners cut the lead to three under a minute to play. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) gave Lewis some breathing room going into the break thanks to a 3-pointer with just six seconds remaining in the half that made it 38-32.

Lewis led 42-36 in the second when the game changing 13-0 run gave Lewis a 55-36 advantage with 14:15 remaining in the game. Missouri S&T cut the lead to 11 with 7:35 left when Currin responded by connecting on her third trey of the half. The Lady Miners cut the Lewis lead to eight when it was Currin once again halting the Missouri S&T run by getting to the line and sinking two free throws. The points all but ended Missouri S&T's hopes of continuing their season.

Currin scored all 14 of her points in the second half. Junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg), who was named All-GLVC First Team on Friday, recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

"Kady and Jenny went through the tournament run last year," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "I feel comfortable with the ball in their hands."

Carbuagh and senior Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) also added four assists to help Lewis record assists on 19 of their 24 baskets.

Freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) totaled 11 points. Sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) finished with 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

Lewis shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field while limiting the Lady Miners to 49.1 percent (27-of-55).

"I thought defensively we were pretty solid today," Carlsen said. "We could have moved our feet better at times but we took them out of their sets and this time of the year it's all about survive and advance."

Missouri S&T ends their season at 14-14. Lewis improves to 17-11, a win better than last season's total of 16. The Flyers play Southern Indiana on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the GLVC Semifinals next weekend on the campus of Illinois-Springfield.
