Kissimmee, Fla. - Lewis University freshman Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) went 6-for-8 with three RBI to propel the Flyers to a pair of victories over Gannon (6-1) and St. Rose (8-4) in Day Two of the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola County Softball Complex on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.
"We played two good teams today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Gannon was a huge game because it was a regional contest and we jumped on St. Rose early and often."
With the sweep, Lewis brings its record back to .500 at 3-3, while Gannon falls to 0-1 and St. Rose drops to 0-1.
"It was important for us to get back to .500," DiMatteo said. "It was a good day all around for everyone today. I was pleased with both our pitching and our hitting and now it's full steam ahead."
In the opener, Hefler was the offensive catalyst from her lead-off position, as the Glenbard West graduate went 4-for-4, with three RBI, two stolen bases and a double.
Lewis was able to take advantage of four Golden Knight miscues, as the Flyers scored five unearned runs. Lewis sophomore pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was the beneficiary, as she earned the complete-game win, striking out five batters while allowing four hits and one unearned run. Habel is now 1-1 on the season.
While Habel was the beneficiary of five unearned runs against Gannon, Lewis freshman pitcher Amy Christopher (Lafayette, Colo./Holy Family) took advantage of three Flyer home runs, two from junior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South), on her way to her first collegiate victory in the nightcap against St. Rose. In five innings of work, Christopher (1-1), allowed five hits and four runs, while striking out two batters.
Offensively, Harmon went 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored, while freshman third baseman Courtney Makowski (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) collected her first collegiate home run with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Senior shortstop Kara Harmatys (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Flyers.
Lewis returns to action on Monday (March 1), as the Flyers battle both Holy Family (11 AM) and Lake Erie (1 PM).
