ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis clinched a spot in the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament after defeating St. Joseph's 85-51 Thursday (Feb. 4) night at Neil Carey Arena in a GLVC North showdown. The win was highlighted by a career-best 37 points by junior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg).
Turpel had her GLVC leading ninth double-double with 6:10 remaining in the first half, finishing with 37 points and career-high 17 rebounds on 16-of-25 shooting. Turpel also tied a career-high with four blocks.
"I'm happy for her," head coach Lisa Carlsen added. "It's hard for anyone to match-up one-on-one against her."
Lewis controlled much of the first half as they held the Pumas scoreless for the first six minutes of the game, jumping out to an early 13-0 lead highlighted by 10 points from Turpel. The Pumas then responded, chipping away the Lewis lead to eight going into the half, 32-24.
The Flyers jumped out in the second half the same way as the first, holding St. Joseph's scoreless for the first 3:10 with a 10-0 run. Lewis outscored the Pumas 53-27 in the second half, holding St. Joseph's to 18-of-63 shooting for the game. The Flyers controlled the offensive glass for the seventh-straight game, holding a 17-11 advantage while leading points in the paint, 44-26.
"For the most part I thought our defense was solid, we gave up a few more offensive boards than I would have liked, but I'm happy with it," Carlsen said.
Junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had 13 points, sophomore Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) had nine points for the Flyers while freshman Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) chipped in eight points.
Lewis improves to 13-9 (9-4 GLVC) while the Pumas drop to 5-17 (3-10 GLVC).
Tatiana Ortiz led the Pumas with 13 points.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 6) when they welcome UW-Parkside to Neil Carey Arena as they battle for first-place in the GLVC North. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
