Men's Basketball: Lewis 64, UW-Parkside 53 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University sophomore forward Matt Toth (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led four players in double-figures with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds to propel the host Flyers to the 64-53 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over UW-Parkside on Saturday (Feb. 6) night at Neil Carey Arena.
"It was good to see Matt play like that tonight," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. "He's playing with confidence on the offensive end, but more importantly he went up and rebounded the ball and did some good things on the defensive end."
Toth's classmate Marty Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) posted 12 points while teammates David Bryant (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) and Donald Rowe (Kansas City, Kan./Wyandotte/Independence C.C.) each scored 10 points apiece for the Flyers.
With the victory, Lewis improves to 14-9 overall and 6-8 in GLVC play, while the visiting Rangers drop to 8-15 on the season and 3-11 in conference action.
UW-Parkside's Kevin Senechalle led the Rangers with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting. The Rangers leading scorers Grant Johnson (16.3 ppg.) and Jeremy Saffold (15.7 ppg.) were held to a combined 15 points, shooting 5-for-21 (23.8%) from the floor.
"We really wanted to be physical with (Saffold and Johnson) and make it hard for them," Trost said. "Coming off screens and staggered screens, we wanted to make sure another man was there and I thought we did that for the most part."
Both teams will square off again on Thursday (Feb. 11) night, as the Flyers and Rangers meet for a 7:45 PM showdown at UW-Parkside's DeSimone Gymnasium.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
