Lockport, Ill. - Spurred by a dominating performance from the top of their line-up, the Lewis University men's tennis team earned the 6-3 non-conference victory over St. Francis (Ill.) in the Flyers' Spring opener at the Challenge Fitness Club on Tuesday (Feb. 9) afternoon.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-0 on the campaign, while the visiting Saints drop to 2-1 overall.

Lewis received a pair of victories from redshirt sophomores Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese), Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) and junior Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley).

Lapimaa defeated St. Francis' Scott Surges, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and paired up with Pestinger to earn the 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Surges and Luis Oliveira. Pestinger would also beat Oliveira, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Irdoja upended Jakub Szymanski at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-7 (10-8), 10-4) and teamed up with junior Mike Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) for the 8-3 win over Szymanski and Jacob Quigley at No. 2 doubles.

Lewis freshman Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) rounded out the victories for the Flyers with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Andres Stecher at No. 5 singles.

"Overall, I'm pleased with how we played," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "There are some things we need to shore up in our doubles, but we played pretty well in singles.

"There was great team chemistry out there and with it being some of the guys' first college matches, I thought they performed admirably."

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 13) morning, as the Flyers head to Houghton, Michigan to square off with Lake Superior State. First serve is slated for 10 AM.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
