ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 13 UC San Diego took the first of back-to-back matches with No. 15 men's volleyball by sweeping the Flyers 30-26, 30-24, 30-22 in a non-conference match at Neil Carey Arena on Friday night.
The Flyers held their only lead of the match in the opening set. However the Tritons were able to take the frame thanks to scoring consecutive points on nine occasions. UC San Diego used quick leads of 7-3 and 10-3 in the second and third frames to take early control and win both.
Jason Spangler and Frank Fritsch led UC San Diego with 12 kills. They helped the Tritons out-hit the Flyers .358 to .229.
"The guys are going to have to bring a higher level of intensity tomorrow night," head coach Dan Friend said.
For the Flyers, sophomore Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) hit .471 with nine kills and four block assists. Freshman Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) led Lewis with 11 kills. Senior Rikki Garma (Lihue, Hawaii/Ost) recorded a match-best 13 digs.
UC San Diego (7-13) and Lewis (11-6) tangle again on Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
