ROLLA, Mo. - The Flyers bounced back from a 14-6 game one loss to Missouri S&T by defeating the Miners 7-4 in game two on Sunday. The doubleheader opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play for the Flyers.

Lewis fell behind 9-2 in game one but scored four in the top of the sixth to make it closer. However Missouri S&T tacked on five additional runs to pull away.

Junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) took the loss (1-2). He allowed nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits and three walks. He struck out six in five innings.

Junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in the opening game.

"Game one was as sloppy as the weather," head coach Tim McDonough said. "I was disappointed how we competed. We didn't come out as sharp as I would have liked."

Lewis fell behind in game two thanks to a pair of Missouri S&T runs in the bottom of the first. Lewis quickly tied it up in the top of the second when junior Vince Campagna (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) smacked a two-run home run.

Following a Miners' run in the bottom of the second the Flyers took their first lead of the day in the fourth thanks to a pair of runs. A sacrifice fly by junior Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) scored freshman Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic). Senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs)'s (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) two-out RBI singled scored Campagna.

The lead didn't last long as the Miners scored a single run in the bottom of the frame to knot it at four. It stayed that way until Lewis put three on the board in the top of the seventh. A Missouri S&T error with two outs kept the inning alive for freshman Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) to single and score Householder. Freshman Kyle Thomas followed with a double to score two more and make it a 7-4 game.

Senior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) finished off the seventh to get the complete game victory and move his record to 3-1. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out 10 Miners.

"Joe will tell you he can throw better than he did today but he and the rest of the guys grinded it out," McDonough said. "It was a hard fought win. The Thomas brothers got the clutch hits to help us earn a road split."

Missouri S&T is now 4-13 (2-1 GLVC) while Lewis is 9-6 (1-1 GLVC). The Flyers face conference-newcomer Maryville on Monday in a doubleheader at noon.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
