ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After the Lewis baseball team swept a doubleheader from Quincy on Friday; the Hawks returned the favor to Lewis on Sunday by sweeping the Flyers 13-3 and 6-3 at a windy Brennan Field.
Lewis drew first blood in the opening game thanks to a two-out RBI single by junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) to score junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) in the first.
Following two runs in the top of the second, Lewis tied it with a pair of their own in the bottom of the frame. The big hit came on a Forkin single that scored freshman Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and senior Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan).
However Quincy broke open game with three runs in the third and five in the fourth.
Freshman Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) took the loss for Lewis, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits. His record falls to 1-2.
Quincy starter Mike Mueller struck out 11 batters in the complete game victory.
"They did a better job of putting the ball in play today," head coach Tim McDonough said. "If we did the same we could have squeezed out a few more runs."
In game two, Quincy took the lead with a pair of runs in the first. Lewis added one in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) to score leadoff hitter freshman Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy).
Quincy extended their lead with one in the third and two in the fifth. Lewis made it interesting with two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Newsome and Norwood each had a RBI in the frame.
Quincy pushed across an unearned run in the ninth to make it a 6-3 game entering the final half inning. Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Forkin walked and Householder singled with two outs. However junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) popped out to end the game.
Freshman Steve Almanza (Glendale, Ariz./Horizon) took the loss to drop 2-1. He allowed five runs, four earned, in 5.1 innings. Sophomore Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) pitched a scoreless 2.2 innings of work to keep his ERA at a perfect 0.00 in 14.2 innings out of the pen.
The Flyers were plagued by four errors in game two.
"We need to play with increased defensive focus and intensity," McDonough said.
Quincy improves to 10-9 (3-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) while Lewis falls to 12-11 (4-4 GLVC). The Flyers host Upper Iowa on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
